Transporting building materials from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) to Nome, Alaska
Background
XHI advances Arctic-ready housing and automated construction solutions for communities facing extreme climate, short building seasons, and high logistics costs. Moving construction materials to Nome requires disciplined coordination across air, sea, and ground transportation and must often be executed within narrow weather windows.Guard Support
To enable XHI’s work in Nome, the Alaska National Guard provided mission-critical logistics support to move building materials from JBER to Western Alaska. Guard personnel assisted with receiving and staging cargo at JBER, preparing materials for safe movement (consolidation, palletization, and load planning), and executing air transportation when commercial pathways were constrained by timing, capacity, or cost.
This effort required close coordination among Guard logistics and air operations staff, XHI project personnel, and receiving partners in Nome. By applying established procedures for cargo handling, safety, and accountability, the Guard helped ensure materials arrived intact and ready for onward movement to the project site.
Operational Value and Community Impact
- Reduced schedule risk by accelerating delivery of time-sensitive materials into a remote Arctic environment.
- Improved safety and reliability through professional load preparation, securing, and handling practices.
- Lowered logistical friction for research and demonstration activities supporting resilient housing outcomes.
- Provided a practical training and readiness opportunity aligned with the Guard’s state and community support mission.
